Scouting Report

Sexton was a five-star recruit coming out of high school and had offers from Kansas, Arizona and North Carolina, but decided to go to Alabama and learn under Avery Johnson. He dragged the Crimson Tide to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2012 - and their first win in the Big Dance since 2006 - with an intense, relentless playing style that has him considered an almost certain lottery pick with a chance of sneaking into the top 10. Sexton was listed at 6-foot-3 by the Crimson Tide but didn't measure up to that at the NBA draft combine, so he's a bit undersized heading to the next level. But any perceived slight or knock on his game or his frame should only serve to motivate the Georgia native. He has a nonstop motor and a hunger for getting to the basket that's easily illustrated in his ability to get to the foul line. Sexton's 10.2 free throw attempts per 40 minutes were the most of any major conference guard in the past two seasons, and he shot 78 percent from the stripe once he got there. He has a quick first step and can get pretty much anywhere he wants on the floor and is a good finisher at the rim. Sexton has NBA range, although his jumper is still developing, but that ability to get to his spots means it's only a matter of getting the mechanics right before he's a strong mid-range shooter. He has the potential to be a good defender due to his lateral quickness and effort, and his length is impressive for his frame. The big concern with Sexton is his ability to get others involved. He averaged only 3.6 assists despite having the ball in his hands most of the time he was on the floor, and he tends to take too many chances when he does look for teammates. And for as capable as he is as a one-on-one defender, teams will seek him out to exploit on switches until he gets stronger. There's a little bit of Russell Westbrook in Sexton's game but the more likely outcome is a Patrick Beverley-level player - with the potential to fall somewhere in between those two if things break just right.
