Scouting Report

Carter may not have the limitless upside of possible No. 1 overall pick DeAndre Ayton or the wow factor of former Duke teammate Marvin Bagley III, but the ultra-steady center still rates as a surefire lottery choice with an excellent chance of carving out a long and impactful NBA career based on his appealing blend of size, skill and smarts. An academic and athletic standout in high school, Carter seriously considered attending Harvard as one of the nation's most sought-after recruits before deciding to join an abundantly talented Blue Devils' incoming class. Though primarily confined to a supporting role due to Duke's wealth of options, the Atlanta native quickly made his mark as one of the nation's better rebounders while showing remarkable polish for a big man who turned 19 in April. Carter's greatest strength may be a lack of glaring weaknesses, as his light feet, awareness and soft touch make him a difficult matchup in the post and a 7-foot-4 1/2-inch wingspan helps him hold his own as a rim protector capable of guarding the perimeter as well. He also gets high marks for his passing ability and showed plenty of promise as a floor-stretching big, making 41.3 percent (19 of 46) of his 3-point attempts and shooting nearly 74 percent from the foul line at Duke.
