Scouting Report

In a league where Isaiah Thomas can average 29 points per game, it'd be awfully shortsighted to dismiss Evans' chances of being a star due to his size. The shortest player at May's NBA combine in Chicago, Evans also had the longest wingspan of any player who measured under 6 feet. Combine that with a lightning-quick first step and it's easy to see Evans sneaking into the bottom of the first round. He ran a lot of pick-and-roll at Oklahoma State - the Cowboys were one of the most efficient offenses in the country - and that's likely what he'll mostly be doing when he has the ball in the NBA. Perhaps the biggest change from his freshman to sophomore seasons was Evans' ability to use his body to create space. He's considerably more adept at taking contact and still getting to his spot, having bumped his free-throw rate up from 5.3 to 8.2 per 40 minutes. His assist rate took a solid turn north as well, as Evans seems to understand when to attack and when to look for others in the pick-and-roll. His upside as a shooter remains a question mark. Evans shot 40.7 percent from 3-point range in college but only attempted 3.0 3s per game as a sophomore - just 20 percent of his overall field-goal attempts. He needs to be a consistent threat from long distance so defenders won't go under screens and sit back waiting for him to penetrate. Despite his improvement creating space, he's still not a great finisher at the rim and often relies on a floater rather than taking it all the way to the basket. Evans is going to be at a disadvantage defensively against most guards due to his size, but that impressive wingspan and a strong frame should ensure that he's far from a liability. It may take some time for Evans to be a rotation player in the NBA, but given his quickness and hunger for the game, he should at the very least become a player who can come off the bench and create instant offense.
